Summary

A deluxe bind-up edition of Naoki Urasawa’s award-winning epic of doomsday cults, giant robots and a group of friends trying to save the world from destruction!

Humanity, having faced extinction at the end of the 20th century, would not have entered the new millennium if it weren't for them。 In 1969, during their youth, they created a symbol。 In 1997, as the coming disaster slowly starts to unfold, that symbol returns。 This is the story of a group of boys who try to save the world。

The war is over。 The Friend is dead。 Finally free from the threat of extinction, peace has come to the people of Tokyo once again。 But the mystery surrounding the Friend still remains。 Nobody knows who the Friend was or where they came from, and the only clue is hidden deep in the Kenji’s memories。 The time has come to open Pandora’s box and see what lies inside。

Most importantly, what set in motion the events that lead up to the end of the world? All the of the characters look to be here - from Kanna to Yukiji。 There is an especially poignant moment with Yukiji near the end that pretty much made the volume already worth the cost。Those who want more information, some great closure, and a return to the story/characters will definitely want to get 21st Century Boys。 Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher。 。。。more

Determined to dig deeper, Kenji reunites with some of his old buddies in the hope of learning the truth behind it all。This is basically the manga equivalent of a Stephen King novel, channeling themes and plot devices from the likes of It, Dreamcatcher, The Running Man and quite a few others。 A young group of friends that make an innocent promise which ends up creating the most dangerous cult in the world, a 'friend' turned into the world's greatest evil, a strange suicide that reunites a group of adults to solve a mystery from their childhood which ended up leading to an apocalyptic police state, clever use of cultural references, rock songs and historical allegories to tell the full story, extremely small actions resulting in extremely massive consequences, an eerie threat lurking in the shadows that may or may not be of supernatural origins, kids overthrowing a totalitarian regime and rebelling against society while fighting against a sinister threat that no one else knows about; sound King enough for ya? Though I don't think it's quite as good as Monster by the same author, it's definitely very close。 It's a masterpiece of intricate plotting, interweaving narratives, deep character development and psychological complexity。 The villain's presence is suffocating from the very beginning while remaining mysterious and terrifying until the final chapter。 It's intense, it's relatable, it's horrifying and it's an emotional rollercoaster。 Be careful who you call your friend and be careful of the promises you make。 You might just end up causing the end of the world。 。。。more

I feel like anything that elicits tears has to get 5 stars, right? In all seriousness, 21st Century Boys did the things that I was hoping for at the end of 20th Century Boys in terms of addressing loose ends in a way that was captivating and at least mostly satisfying (without being cliche or cheesy)。I know some folks have an issue with Katsumata as a plot device, but I actually liked it, and it was way better than the few theories I had going toward the end of 20th Century Boys。 I think what mad I feel like anything that elicits tears has to get 5 stars, right? In all seriousness, 21st Century Boys did the things that I was hoping for at the end of 20th Century Boys in terms of addressing loose ends in a way that was captivating and at least mostly satisfying (without being cliche or cheesy)。I know some folks have an issue with Katsumata as a plot device, but I actually liked it, and it was way better than the few theories I had going toward the end of 20th Century Boys。 I think what made it work so well was the fact that Urasawa already introduced this sort of haze or lack of clarity around what the past entailed, almost from the get-go。 So, readers can never be totally sure if what they thought happened was the true or complete story。 Kanna's character returned to something that actually resonated, as opposed to the character I was watching unfold toward the end of 20th Century Boys, leaving my only real issue with Kenji's 15-year hiatus。Overall, I'm so glad the series got capped with these two volumes, because it was a great way to end it。 The merits totally eclipsed any complaints I may have had coming out of 20th Century Boys。 。。。more

。。。more
